Celebrations with soul at Secret Hill

Maha Shivaratri – A sacred night filled with energy and devotion.

What is Maha Shivaratri?

Maha Shivaratri, one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar, is celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva, the destroyer and regenerator of the universe. In 2026, it took place on Sunday 15 February, marked by spiritual devotion, fasting, night vigils, and traditional rituals that bring together thousands of devotees across India, including coastal regions like South Goa, known for its serene beaches and vibrant spiritual culture.

Traditional Practices of Maha Shivaratri

During this sacred night, devotees observe:

  • Fasting during the day and night
  • Pujas and Rudrabhishek (ceremonial bathing of the Shiva Lingam)
  • Chanting mantras such as “Om Namah Shivaya”
  • Meditation and night-long vigils, continuing until dawn

In southern Goa, the festival has a particularly communal character. Locals gather at Mallikarjun Temple, one of the oldest temples in the region, where special pujas, devotional chants, and night vigils create an atmosphere of unity, tradition, and shared devotion.

Maha Shivaratri at Our Yoga Shala in Patnem Beach

On the afternoon of 15 February, just before sunset, we celebrated Maha Shivaratri in our Yoga Shala at Patnem Beach, Goa. The evening began with a guided meditation, inviting participants to connect with the stillness within. This was followed by mantra chanting in devotion to Shiva, filling the Shala with sacred vibrations.

The celebration culminated in a fire puja, led by a local priest — a powerful ritual that united our community in prayer, gratitude, and reverence. For us, our Yoga Shala is a sanctuary for the cultivation of the Self, where inner growth, spiritual awareness, and transformation are gently nurtured.

We felt immensely privileged to host such a special Maha Shivaratri event, honoring the rich traditions of India and the yogic heritage.

Spiritual Meaning of Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri, meaning “The Great Night of Shiva,” is also celebrated as the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing the sacred union of consciousness and energy, the masculine and the feminine, and the harmony of stillness and devotion.

Spiritually, it represents a night of profound inner awakening, when the energies of the body and mind align for meditation, mantra chanting, and personal transformation. It invites us to unite dualities within ourselves and return to a state of wholeness and expanded awareness.
